Marlon's Advice
BHC: Well, we're winding down and coming to the end of our interview. We just need a little advice from the great Marlon McKenny! Let's begin with the question of skills: What skills do you think make a strong writer?
MM: Reading. Definitely reading. A writer needs to read in some manner, even if they "read" by listening to audio books.
BHC: Tell us about your experience with social media? Which platform do you like best?
MM: Instagram. I use them all but my favorite is Instagram because it’s more visual.
BHC: Just a couple more questions. What do you feel are common traps for aspiring writers?
MM: Definitely ego. It’s important to listen to others, whether it’s editors, readers, etc. to get feedback and make the necessary adjustments.
BHC: So true! And last but not least, what’s your best advice for self-publishers?
MM: Watch your budget and your bottom line. Don't just think of the next book, think of the next five or ten years. Don’t spend needless excessive money when you don’t need to. Becoming a publisher is not not a sprint, it’s a marathon. Don’t be afraid to make adjustments along the way.
